What is an Electric Motorcycle and How Does It Work?

What is an Electric Motorcycle and How Does It Work?

Today, electric motorcycles are steadily gaining popularity globally and aren’t slowing down.
But, what makes an e-motorcycle? How does it work? Why are more people making the switch?
In this article, we extensively explore what an electric motorcycle is and how it operates. We also quickly examine some crucial advantages of the machine and what makes it so different from its gas-powered counterparts.

So, don’t stop reading.

What is an E-Motorcycle?

Simply put, electric motorcycles are electric vehicles that move on two tires. However, it is not to be mistaken for e-bicycles as those have pedals while an electric motorcycle does not.
Like gasoline-powered vehicles, an electric motorcycle is pushed by an engine powered by a battery’s electrical energy.

The fundamental difference is that an electric motorcycle uses either batteries or fuel cells instead of the gas that goes into a regular motorbike.

Here are some quick benefits of an electric motorcycle:
They require less maintenance: An electric motorcycle has fewer moving parts and doesn’t require as much servicing as gas-powered ones.
They are more environmentally sustainable. For example, e-motorcycles do not have to burn fuel and therefore do not emit carbon monoxide. This means they do not contribute to air pollution and are better for the environment.
They are extremely fast and powerful. Do you like speed? Electric motorcycles generate instant torque that provides rapid acceleration!
They are easier to operate. Due to the absence of gears, an electric motorcycle is much easier to use and safer as it does not generate as much heat as gas-powered motorbikes.

Considering all these advantages, it is no surprise that the electric motorcycle is fast becoming a preferred choice among many riders.

But, what is an electric motorcycle operation like? Let’s check it out

How Does an Electric Motorcycle Work?

Electric motorcycles use a similar mechanism to traditional motorcycles. But, unlike gasoline-powered motorcycles, they generate power with an electric engine, which is then converted into kinetic energy.

Now, let’s get into the more science-y bit.

The electric motorcycle operates based on an electromagnet installed on a shaft — a rotor — which is a crucial component of their mechanics. Electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries then powers the engines.

Fun fact? The electrical power in e-motorcycles is much cleaner and more environmentally friendly. It is also much cheaper than gas.

You should also note that electric motorcycles result in significantly less noise pollution as they have a very silent operation.

Essential Components of an E-motorbike

An electric motorcycle, like any other motorcycle, is made up of numerous components. All of these components are necessary for the vehicle to function correctly.

However, here are our top three essential components and how they contribute to an electric motorcycle’s operation:

1. Rechargeable battery
The rechargeable battery is arguably the most important component of the electric motorcycle. After all, the e-motorbike cannot operate without it.

Unlike other vehicles with a large engine, this space is replaced by the electric batteries in this type of vehicle. These are generally 12 V batteries with a 6 unit cell covered with a plastic body.

Fun fact? A fully charged battery provides about 12.6 volts of current to the e-motorcycle.

An electric motorcycle usually uses one battery which can contain multiple battery cells. These batteries are rechargeable and can last for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type and several other factors.
Here are some of the common types of batteries you’ll typically find in an electric motorcycle:
Lithium
Lithium-ion
Lithium-ion phosphate
Lead acid
Nickel metal hydride

2. Electric Engine
The electric engine is what receives power from the battery and converts it to mechanical energy in the vehicle.

In electric motorcycles, the engines are smaller than those found in gas-powered vehicles. As a result, you’ll typically find them at the back wheel, connected by a chain and sprocket.

Unlike other types, the electric engine is simple in design. The two crucial components of gas-powered engines are a cylinder and a piston, which are absent in electric motors.

Unlike gasoline vehicles with internal combustion engines that take several seconds to attain their full power and torque, electric motors can reach their maximum power and torque almost instantly.
Additionally, electric engines do not require engine oil, which is required for lubrication in gas engines. This makes them a cleaner, environmentally friendly choice.

3. Brakes
While your electrical motorcycle battery will provide the power you need to move, and the electric engine will get you on your way, your e-motorbike brakes are the reason you can slow down and stop safely.

So, we think that earns them a place on our list of the top three components of e-motorcycles.
However, unlike traditional motorcycles, the two brakes in electric motorcycles typically go on the handlebars, one on each. You’ll find the rear tire brakes on the left handlebar (since there is no clutch), while the brakes on the right handlebar will slow down your front tire.

Final Thoughts

Electric motorcycles are unquestionably amazing vehicles that will continue to grow in popularity. Thankfully, you now have a clearer idea of what an e-motorbike is, its various components, and how they combine to provide a smooth operation.
